postheadericon Why NLP? Communication

Good and effective communication is essential for successful business and personal interactions.  Communication is not limited to conversations – in the business world, communication is varied – phone, email, and face-to-face.  This requires a heightened sensitivity and understanding of the ways in which people communicate to mitigate miscommunication and frustration.Communication is not just limited to the words we use; it is our tone, tempo and most importantly, our body language.  Indeed it is key to master non-verbal communication in order to communicate well with colleagues and clients.Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a toolkit of communication strategies.  It helps to focus awareness on all language patterns – both verbal and non-verbal.  It helps to build better relationships by utilizing these tools and techniques specifically created for the purpose of more effective communication.
About NLP
NLP is a series of communication tools which allows for advanced change and effective communication.  NLP has been credited to being created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s.  Together they discovered that successful people in different fields used similar communication and language structure to achieve greater than average results.  They also began to study the ways in which successful people implemented what they coined as “strategies” (a now mainstream term) in their lives to achieve success.  neuron.jpg neuron image by xnekrosisFor example, someone’s decision making strategy may prove to be more positive and successful than someone else’s.  One of the main ideas in NLP studies, is identifying and implementing successful strategies of others to improve your life - you can imitate or install the desired strategy and do it so many times that new neural pathways would be created (hence the “Neuro” in NLP). Practice or activate this strategy enough, it becomes habitual.  While most NLP is used in a sales setting, NLP is also effective in the therapeutic setting.  Core elements of this system are highly effective as communication tools which can parlay into change in your life.

Examples include:·         Reframing cognitive thoughts·         Removing Fears & Phobias·         Understanding how people communicate & how you communicate·         Strategies - identifying what is successful for others and implementing those processes personally·         Results based thinking and planning  NLP not only focuses on communication skills, which are essential to any business or personal dealing, but NLP also teaches about results or outcome based thinking – setting goals, and employing strategies to achieve those goals.  It is life-coaching, success behaviors and communication. Adam S Adams, CHt is a Certified NLP Practitioner – Call or email today to set up a complementary consultation to discuss how NLP or Hypnosis can help you live a better life. Imagine.          Change.

postheadericon What Would You Change?

I recently asked people in my sphere "if you could change 3 things in your life, what would you change?"

Originally, I thought that this would help me to identify what it is that people actually want - and more specifically, what they want HELP with - which would help me in my business.

But I soon realised that this exercise taught me way more than that.

Asking the question "if you could change 3 things in or about your life" revealed to me that most people don't know what they want. Ok, that's fine, but I wasn't asking people what they wanted to add to their life, I asked what they wanted to change or alter or remove.....what I discovered is that people also don't know what they don't want either.

I thought that most people knew right away what they Don't want - which equals what they want to change...but I found people took hours, days, and even some still have not responded to my inquiry.

So the question is WHY?

The answer is probably as individual as a fingerprint, but I will tell you why I think people took so long to answer that question:

  • People don't have plans.

This is not to be confused with dreams, goals, or aspirations. People dream of retirement, owning a Ferrari, having a vacation, etc. I'm talking about PLANS - measurable, attainable, structured Plans for their lives, relationships, health, career, etc.

There is an old saying "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

Now, I'm not saying that I have a plan for my life either - but I am acutely aware of my lack of a plan and have set about creating a Project Plan for my life (watch this blog for more on running your life like a business!).

  • People are lazy.

Let's face it, people are happy with status quo and would rather complain about things than change things. Me too - I complain about being 30 lbs overweight, and even though I know what it takes to change this, I still am bigger than I want to be and bitching about it.

Why? Because people get apathetic.

Why would I change?

Behavioural Psychologists know that Pain is one of the only motivators for change. People have to get so uncomfortable with their situation that they have no choice but to change. We all know this as the smoker that can give up a 40-year habit when they have been given a diagnosis of cancer.

  • People are in survival mode.

Let's face it, you grow up and leave home, full of hope, promise, talent and energy. And then, SLAM "real life" hits you in the face and says "Who the heck are you buddy? And who the heck cares?"

And that's when it starts. When we start to "settle" and settling may be a great job at a reliable company, or a management position just out of school that you have to take to pay down your student loans, or marrying someone because everyone in your circle is doing it, whatever your story is - at some point, you put off living your dream in place of doing what you thought was right for you at the time.

There is nothing wrong with this. it's normal. But we put off those dreams one decision at a time, until....tomorrow? Retirement? the kids leave home?

In the meantime...we stop dreaming. We stop thinking about change because change becomes scary. We've got a mortgage, kids, responsibilities - we can't throw it all away for flights of fancy. But are they flights of fancy? Most people won't even allow themselves to dream anymore because they are in survival mode - you know that mode, don't you? Where you are living pay cheque to pay cheque, day in and day out, getting distracted by mundane life and just counting the years til retirement...if you're lucky enough to be able to afford a retirement.

My whole point is, people don't want to tell me what they want to change, because maybe then they will have to admit to their own conscious mind that they are not happy with all elements of their life. This may cause a crack in the foundation to be exposed. But my observation is: it's already there.

Talk soon!

postheadericon 5 Secrets of Great Communicators

I seem to be preoccupied with communication lately.

Today, instead of being upset over the form that communication is taking in modern society, (insert irony here) I wanted to talk a bit about Secrets of Great Communicators.

When most people think about communication, they think about words. But communication is a great deal more that just speaking – verbal communication is about words, tone, rhythm, the words we choose, and structure. Non-verbal communication can speak volumes if it is incongruent to the words we are speaking. What about written communication? How we break up paragraphs, punctuate, spell – all has a bearing on our communication style – and ultimately defines how we are viewed and judged as to how effective we are as communicators.

Secret #1:
Connection is key
. Great communicators know that you have to connect with your audience – whether that is 1 person or 100 people, connection is key. If you can communicate to someone in a manner that makes them feel comfortable, it moves mountains.

So how do you connect?

Secret #2:
Speak their language. Each person has their own manner of communicating – basic NLP teaches us about sensory modalities – some people are visual people, some are kineasthetic, some are auditory – and each modality speaks their own “language” pertaining to that sense. If you can identify the sensory language that a person is speaking, connection and rapport is built rapidly.

Secret #3:
WII FM. Another way to connect with your communication is to keep in mind what Kevin Hogan calls “WII FM radio” – keep focused on the “What’s in it for me” factor for everyone you are communicating with.

What is in it for the listener? Why do they care? Are they interested?

Great communicators know that in order for communication to be effective and engaging, you have to keep in mind what is to be gained by the listener from this exchange.

Secret #4:
Keep it short and to the point. Stories should not take more than about 2 minutes from start to finish. Not every tale of woe or adventure requires a lengthy back-story to “set the scene”.

Secret #5:
It’s all about them. There is magic in allowing people to talk about themselves. Even more magic if you can become an effective listener. Most people are more than ready to talk about themselves and what interests them. Make it all about them, and watch the connection happen. It’s all about them. What’s more is that they will think you are an amazing communicator because of this secret.

Bonus....

Secret #6:
Know a little or a lot about a lot. Good communicators can walk into any room and feel confident that no matter who they encounter. The more you know about, the more you have to talk about.

So what about the ultra-shy person who does not want to fall into #5 – Great communicators know tricks to speak or ask questions to elicit responses that allow conversation to flow naturally.

That’s all for today folks!

postheadericon The River of Life

The River of Life

Imagine you are finishing a nature walk, and you arrive at the banks of a beautiful fresh river, with sparkling water and the sounds and smells of life all around you.

As you put your hand in the fresh water to wash your face, perhaps you can take a sip of natures finest to liven and sustain you.

And as that most relaxing countryside scene is taking place you notice that several yards to the right of you, upstream, is another person - surely a fellow reveller in this orgy of natural beauty.

But wait!

Closer inspection reveals that this person is not availing himself of the serenity of nature, in fact they are fouling the water! How disgusting you think to yourself, as you now look down at the hand that was in that same water moments ago.

Perhaps you shudder as you notice that there are actually many people on the riverbank - these good folks must surely be equally repulsed by this unnecessary and antisocial behaviour.

Except…

As you pay closer attention to the scene, it is almost stomach turning to see that pretty much everyone is soiling the river, the beautiful river, with the most abhorrent filth.

What’s even worse is that they seem to be gloating and luxuriating in their own putridity even as they generously share their slop with the river, and by extension everybody else.

The river is Communication. The river is Life.

With every new day a fresh privilege not offered to everyone - people die for all kinds of reasons, not all expectedly - we are faced with the clean water of opportunity, in the river of communication, or life.

How many people do you know who, on a daily basis, are sharing their whining, their ranting, their toxic relationship issues and more - all the while feeling better for the offloading with no concern for the crud they smear liberally over the lives of their victims?

A good few, I’ll bet - maybe friends, family, colleagues?

It’s probably safe to say that you know more of these river-despoilers, these noxious negatives than clear water positives.

Turn on the TV, listen to water cooler banter or head to the bar or coffee shop and there is crud aplenty being generously applied with not a second glance.

Are you making the river cleaner or are you filling it with unnecessary excrement?

In the end it’s a choice.

Of course we all have challenges in our lives, and often these situations are very serious. Boredom and self loathing are a poor reason to pee in the pool though.

It might be worth asking the question whether you appreciate someone else’s sludge being routinely dumped on you - I know I sure don’t.

As a matter of fact, listening to other people indulge themselves can be extraordinarily detrimental to ones health.

Are you depressed because your own burden is large? Or is it that you are involuntarily carrying around everyone else’s? I’ll let you mull that over…

So how do we clean the river?

You can’t begin with other peoples dreck, but perhaps saving the whole world from your own, or at least lessening the barrage of BS you inflict on other people might make their load a little lighter, and the river a little cleaner.

If enough people do it, the river water might even become drinkable again..

How would that taste feel?

postheadericon Is Your Fave 5 Toxic?

You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

As your subconscious mind calculates the implication of this statement for you, take a look at Olympic athletes, politicians, TV stars, movie stars, success stories, gurus and celebrities of all walks - do you notice the company they keep?

When do you see Steven Spielberg having lunch at Taco Bell with his window cleaner? Oprah at KFC with her hairstylist? President Clinton dropping in for an apple pie at the house of his gardener?

Like attracts like. Now, I am not saying that any of these folks are evil, or affecting airs and graces - it is simply that the rich, successful, spiritually enlightened, religious, downtrodden, whoever, prefer the company of people who are sharing or want to share a like experience of reality.

Many of you are trying hard to exceed your present circumstances - perhaps spiritual or personal growth, or a quest for wealth and fame. The results however may not be meeting the intensity of the effort you are making, leading to frustration, and eventually loss of faith or hope - which can be devastating and life changing for all the wrong reasons.

As I have written before, the biggest obstacle facing any person is a set of subconsciously held belief systems that permit no success; such as a belief set up through early life experience that money is the root of all evil or that you “won’t ever amount to anything”.

Imagine for a moment that you have taken control of your life, and, using hypnotherapy are working harmoniously and congruently with the subconscious mind - are peace, prosperity and tranquility immediately yours?

Not so fast.
